Early Life and Career
Stephen Arnold Douglas was born in Brandon, Vermont in 1813.
He began his working life as an apprentice to a carpenter. In 1830, his family moved to New York, and Douglas enrolled in the city academy to study law.

After six months, Stephen decided he knew enough and headed west to start his legal practice. He settled in Illinois, where he was hired as a clerk in a court and had to educate himself. Within a year, he was appointed as a state prosecutor.
Political Career
Despite his young age of 22, Douglas actively engaged in state politics and became a member of the legislative assembly in 1836.
By 1840, he was already the State Secretary of Illinois. Attempts to run for the U.S. Congress were hindered by age restrictions (a congressman cannot be younger than 30 yea
