    Reed Hastings was born on October 8, 1960, in Boston, Massachusetts.His father, Wilmot Reed Hastings, served in President Richard Nixon's administration, while his great-grandfather, Alfred Lee Loomis, was a notable lawyer, financier, scientist, inventor, and film executive.

    Hastings attended private schools in Cambridge before enrolling in the United States Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. However, he ultimately chose to serve in the Peace Corps instead.
